Welcome to my blog
The purpose of taking this course is to come up with new ideas of presenting my online SOC101 course. I find the way that I am presenting it a tad boring to me, I can't imagine what my students think.
Although this is my first time teaching online using Blackboard I am discovering some very interesting things. I completed my master's degree online through the University of Phoenix. There is a big difference in being an online student and being an online instructor. I am finding a lot of students who don't like that I facilitate the course weekly requiring weekly accountability. Many of my students have overflowed their plates (like myself) and are struggling to keep their head above water, but thought adding an online class would be easy.

About Me
- Barbara
- Oh goodness, where to begin. I have been adjunct faculty for two years, teaching Sociology. I primarily work for Glendale CC, usually pick up a class for Mesa Red Mountain every semester, I have also taught at South Mountain CC. I am teaching my first online SOC101 course for GCC using Blackboard. I think my class is a little (okay a lot) boring so I took this course to try and jazz it up a bit. And because I have so much free time (haha). I am also a licensed real estate agent and I work full-time in North Scottsdale.

I really think it's odd all the time! I've been teaching online for a coupla years now and before that I TAed Blackboard. NOW I am taking this course, and I just laugh.... It's a 200 level course (most of the classes I've taken in the last decade start with a 7, 8 or 9) and it's taught by someone with whom I USUALLY write classes like this. Hahahahah
Although these students want/expect no deadlines, I've found anything less than weekly deadlines is too long and they "forget" the class and never survive. So I think at least once a week deadlines are very legit! :-)
Wow - your blog looks great and has made me realize I am definitely going to have to work to spruce mine up! I agree with Shelley about the weekly deadlines. It is too easy to sink in an online course if there isn't structure to expectations and assignments.
Weekly deadlines are a must. We started the semester on Saturday which is Day 1. The week runs Saturday (Day 1) to Friday (Day 7). I post their assignments on Day 1. They have assignments due on Day 3 & Day 7. If Day 3 falls on a holiday then they assignment is due on Day 4. So this means that they have to be in the class a couple of times a week at least.
Barbara,
And I've gone back and forth over having more than weekly deadlines during a full sixteen week semester. I've gotten to the point where I like have 15 deadlines total. This allows me to roll out the same course in 16 weeks (1 deadline a week), 8 weeks (2 deadlines a week) or 5 weeks (3 deadlines a week). However, it doesn't separate deadlines for initial postings (discussion board, blog, etc.) and replies. Sometimes this is a pain (esp. for the students who get their work done early and are stuck waiting for the procrastinators like myself).
I have been practicing bloggin in Blackboard with myself as a student and the instructor. For my next class I am going to try blogging every other week with the students. They will have parameters such as blogging 3-6 times at least 3 times but no more than 6. I like to use current events a lot so I thought I could set up a link to CNN have them read it and then blog about it. It's still in the "working" stage I need to play with it some more. Maybe I'll try it here......
